THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Bible Reading:  1 John 1:4-7 and John 3:19-21
Memory Verse:  John 12:46 – “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”

What do you think of at Christmas time? Presents? Candles? Bells? Lights?

During Christmas we can observe lights in various shapes and colors. Sometimes in a town you might find lights in a lantern hanging from a street light, or a wreath with colored candle in the center, lights on trees, etc.

How glad we are to enjoy sunlight during the day, or moonlight and stars during the night. There are even lighthouses in parts of the world to guide ships during the darkness. Sometimes when we awaken at night, it is comforting to have a light.

Let’s see what our Christmas lights have to tell us…

GOD’S WORD IS A LIGHT.

“We have also a more sure word of prophesy…a light that shineth in a dark place.” II Peter 1:19

Did God’s Word give “light” about Christmas long before the first Christmas happened? Yes, Isaiah 9:6 says: “For unto us a child is born-A son is given”. God’s Own Son who laid aside His Glory and left Heaven. He came to earth and took upon Himself a “body house” – flesh and blood such as we have, and dwelt among us.

God’s Word even gave “light” as to where He would come as a baby. Micah 5:2 says: “But thou Bethlehem…out of thee shall he come forth…that is to be ruler whose goings forth have been from old from everlasting.” The Lord Jesus is God’s eternal Son, He didn’t just become His Son at Bethlehem.

There were two very special Christmas lights when God kept His promise and sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world. The angels came to the shepherds on a hillside with the announcement of Jesus’ Birth. The shepherds saw a little of the GLORY LIGHT OF HEAVEN and heard them say “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, Who is Christ the Lord.” “Ye shall find the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger.”

Now I want to tell you about a different kind of light a very wonderful kind of light. This light comes from the one who cares for you. THE LIGHT OF LOVE. It filled the sheherd’s hearts. It shone in Mary’s eyes as she looked at the baby that God had given her.

The Lord Jesus came to show us God’s love. Love shone through all the Saviour did. God shines His love all around you all the time. To Him you are a very special person, so special that He sent His Son to die for you so that He might have you with Him for ever, if you have received Him into your life. If it wasn’t for GOD’S LOVE for you there would be no promise for eternal life. “But God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

The Lord Jesus Christ did not stay dead but He was buried and rose again, making it possible for you and I to have new life in Him. When you see lighted candles it should remind you of God’s promise to each of us. He said, “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.” He is the real Christmas light. The Bible tells us “That God is covered with light as a garment.” (Hebrews 1:3) “His Son, being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His Person.” He came to bring us the knowledge of God and his Holiness. The Lord Jesus is GOD, come down to us.

If you are in a sunlit room do you need the light on? NO! You only need light where there is darkness. Let’s repeat our memory verse again. What is that darkness? The Bible refers to SIN as darkness, deeper than any darkness you or I can remember having seen.

Think of some sins that would keep you in darkness. Telling untruths, getting out of a joy we are told to do, disobeying, being unthankful. Some adults tell us that there is no God or that we come from monkeys. Adults, also live in darkness of sin. Some adults give into sin by allowing a child to be put to death before they are born. Adults are not exempt they, too, need to trust Christ as their Saviour. Without Him there is no eternal life in Heaven.

God loves us so much He doesn’t want us to abide in such darkness. He wants us to have the light of life – Jesus Himself living in our hearts.

To those of us who have received the Lord Jesus, God says “LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS AND GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN”. The Lord, the Light of the world lives in us and we must see that our behavior shows this to others. Will you be God’s Christmas light shining to show others the way to take Jesus as their Saviour?

God’s shining light stands for the GOSPEL. 11 Corinthians 4:4 says,”…the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the LIGHT OF THE GLORIOUS GOSPEL OF CHRIST, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” The Lord Jesus took the darkness of our sin, our sin was upon Himself. This is why He came to bear sin for us – to die in our place. While He was on the cross darkness covered all the land but the worse darkness of sin was our sin that was placed on Him. Jesus died, but he came alive again. God raised Him up the third day. He overcame sin, Satan, and the power of darkness. This is the GOSPEL LIGHT that we must shine forth this Christmas for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ and that others will see their need for eternal life, too.

Our desire is to live for Jesus. He doesn’t want us to stay in the darkness of unforgiven sin. He wants us to “turn from darkness (sin) to light (the Lord)”. This we do by being sorry for the sin that took the Lord Jesus to the cross to suffer for us, and believing on Him.

If you will invite Jesus Christ into your life, this, then will be a real Christmas Light within your life. He will be your light too, and then one day He will take you to be with Him forever in heaven, where there is no need of the sun or the moon for He himself is the light thereof. Also you could say with King David, “THE LORD IS MY LIGHT AND MY SALVATION”.
